Living in today’s fast paced world with nerve-racking work schedules, we’ve been gobbling not-so-healthy fast food almost everyday. At times, we catch ourselves glued to our gadgets for long periods of time, almost oblivious to the changing weather and the lack of real human connections. We spend the major part of our day at work, and also a considerable chunk of our time in commuting. This, along with the stress of meeting deadlines, proving our competency at the workplace and striving for a better tomorrow, adds up to an enormous amount of unwanted stress and anxiety. So How To Manage Work Stress?
While it is good to be competitive and you should indubitably try to excel in whatever you are doing, it is also equally important to learn and tackle stress, to take life easy. Remember, you only live once!
So, here are some easy ways to cope with workplace stress in a healthy manner!
1. Take a quick walk outside your office space or building.
Artificial lights interfere with the body’s clock, or the circadian cycle and trick the brain by hampering the production of “melatonin”. A 5 min walk in the open helps tune the body clock, and reset our brain. This technique will definitely help manage work stress
2. Keep a small plant near your desk, like bamboo or the money plant.
Take a 5 minute break and water the plant, look at it, maybe wipe the leaves to keep the plant clean. Green color soothes the eyes that are strained due to continuous staring at the computer.
3. Play a game of catch to manage work stress.
Stress balls are truly great stress busters, helps you manage work stress. Toss around a stress ball for 5 minutes, or play a game of donkey, just let the happy hormones flow!
4 . Take a power nap.
Shutting your eyes for 10 minutes goes a long way in recharging your tired brain.
Anything longer than 15 minutes will end up making you groggy. Just put your head down on the desk, and clear your mind of all thoughts for 10 minutes.
5 . Munch on some dry fruits.
Keep a jar of mixed nuts, raisins, figs etc at your work place. Almonds, walnuts & cashews are packed with minerals and good fats. They are good for your heart and help you stay fit and healthy.
6 . Keep some books by great thinkers and writers at your desk and read a page or two in between.
Remember that work is just a part of your life and there is so much more that you should be doing in life. What you read in these short breaks might help you uncover your destiny, you never know!
7 . Nibble on some dark chocolate.
This low sugar variety of chocolate is packed with antioxidants that help improve blood flow, reduce cholesterol, release endorphin(s), but most importantly, the very act of savoring a piece of chocolate melts the tension away.
8 . Take a gossip break, nothing reduces stress more than a quick chat with friends.
Walk to a friend’s desk for some gossip, a little chit chat and some laughs. It is a good way to break the monotony of the day.
The idea is to take breaks. The ideal balance would be to have a 5 minute break for every 90 minutes of work. And contrary to the popular belief, a cup of tea or coffee with a cigarette does not count as a break!
So just pull your mind away from the fast paced work life every once in a while and treat yourself with some love. A healthy mind is a productive mind!
