A cough is a sudden reflex generated by the body to clear the throat and breathing passage of foreign particles. A cough is a severe discomfort physically. There are two types of cough – dry and productive. Productive cough is associated with mucous production in the body. Dry cough is an irritating condition that leaves the throat inflamed and dry. - Thyme Tea: Thyme is an aromatic herb embedded with culinary, medicinal and ornamental uses. Thyme is known for its antimicrobial properties. It has been used for treatment of cough as it relaxes the smooth muscles of the trachea and bronchi and open the obstructed air ways. Thyme is employed in the form of fresh thyme leaves or powdered thyme with fresh warm water and one can also add lemon or honey being optional.
2. Liquorice Root Tea: Liquorice has been used for centuries as an antitussive. Licorice root is an expectorant and demulcent, simultaneously soothing your airways while loosening and thinning mucous, easing congestion. The important constituent of liquorice is glycyrrhizin, which is responsible for its properties. The liquorice tea is prepared by placing liquorice root in boiling water and then leaving it for 10-15 minutes. To see the immediate effect, it should be consumed two times a day.
3. Lemon and Honey Syrup: This is an amazing alternative to synthetic cough syrups found at the drug store. Lemon acts as a potent anti-inflammatory and honey has antioxidant capabilities. This preparation soothes the throat and has healing properties. Two tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon into one tablespoon of honey works the best in a dry cough.
4. Fresh Carrot Juice: Carrot juice is full of myriad vitamins and nutrients that relieve the irritation from a dry cough. Simply juice five carrots and add 2 tablespoons of water. Drink this dry cough remedy four times per day until your cough has officially subsided.
5. Gargle Salt Water: Salt water is a great remedy as it releases the discomfort by osmosis. When the concentration of salt is higher outside of the cells in your mucous membranes, water flows out of the cells to balance everything out. When water leaves the cells, swelling goes down, and discomfort is decreased. This remedy is useful in cough with an inflamed tissue. Gargle for 15 seconds, spit and repeat with the remaining water. 6. Cayenne Cough Suppressant: Cayenne is warming and stimulating. It reduces chest pain. A combination of cayenne with fresh ginger, honey, apple cider vinegar gives an instant relief from coughing. Make a healthy cough syrup by mixing one-fourth teaspoon cayenne pepper, one-fourth teaspoon ground ginger, one tablespoon honey, one tablespoon apple cider vinegar and two tablespoons of water.
7. Turmeric and Black Pepper Tea: Turmeric is an excellent herb to help reduce not only the severity of a dry cough but also the inflammation that occurs due to persistent coughing. Along with the soothing and anti-inflammatory qualities of turmeric, black pepper is known to help soothe throat irritation and help protect against viruses and bacteria which may be causing your dry cough to worsen. 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder and 1 teaspoon of black pepper are added to boiling water and let it boil for 3 minutes. This should be taken daily once for dry cough.
8. Ginger Peppermint Syrup: Ginger works as an expectorant and expels mucous from the lungs. The peppermint will help relieve the irritating tickle of a cough. 3 tablespoons of chopped ginger and 1 tablespoon of dried peppermint are added to 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil and then lower the heat so that the liquid simmer. Simmer until the liquid has been reduced by half, then strain. Let it cool slightly, and then stir in 1 cup of honey until it has been dissolved completely. Bottle and take 1 tablespoon every few hours as needed to ease your cough. Keep refrigerated for up to 3 weeks.
9. Garlic: Garlic has both antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. Boil two to three cloves of garlic in a cup of water, allow it to cool to room temperature, add some honey and drink it. This will help your breathing and alleviate other cough symptoms.
10. Almonds: A paste of five to six almonds soaked in water for 8 to 10 hours is prepared with one teaspoon of butter. It is to be eaten three to four times a day until the symptoms fade away.
Bonus Home Remedy: Grapes acts as an expectorant and releases the mucous from the lungs. One can consume grapes or drink grape juice with or without a spoonful of honey.
