What do laxatives do exactly?
Laxatives help with regulating bowel movements and with speeding up the process of digestion. People suffering from chronic constipation depend on laxatives for regular bowel movement. According to research studies, more women than men are known to use laxatives. However, they don’t use it for regulating their bowel movements. They use it for reducing weight quickly! Most women use laxatives which are available in the form of pills.

Regular usage of laxatives takes a toll on the body. Along with helping with the bowel movements, laxatives also drain out nutrients from the body!
Laxatives mainly help with losing what is known as “water weight”. This refers to “water retention” which mainly occurs as a result of dehydration. A person who drinks enough water is unlikely to retain water. Using table salt is another common reason behind water retention. Even regular consumption of condiments like soya sauce can make a person retain water.
Why does this happen?
It happens because of the high sodium content in the table salt and in the sauce. The excess levels of sodium in the body force it to retain fluid. Exercise is one way to counter the retention of water. Laxatives don’t help with preventing it in any way.
Laxatives do help with losing water weight if they are taken twice a day. Some laxatives are also known to flush out toxins from the body. However, in spite of this, physicians are of the opinion that using laxatives isn’t a safe method of losing water weight.
Why do they say this?
It is because regular and increased discharging of water can seriously harm the body. It might cause liver failure and even death. Continued use of laxative pills can do some serious harm to the gastrointestinal tract as well.
Laxatives don’t help with losing weight in any way. Anybody will lose weight temporarily if they stop drinking water. Laxatives aren’t an alternative to other methods of losing weight like exercising and eating a healthy diet.

- There are some serious side effects to using laxatives for a long time. Some of them include dehydration, infection of the gastrointestinal tract, nausea and vomiting.
- Indiscriminate use of laxatives causes “laxative dependence”. The end result of this is that a person loses the ability to produce any bowel movement without taking laxatives.
