Nowadays, what gets the day to a perfect end is having a few glasses of beer with friends and colleagues. For some, there is nothing more delicious than a cool beer on a sunny day. But does anyone ever think about the quantity of beer that is good for your health or the fact that does beer do any good at all?
Well drinking a pint of beer a day could lower the risk of having a stroke or developing a heart disease, a new study has found.
This of 80,000 adults found the natural decline in high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or “good” cholesterol, in the body was slowed by a moderate intake of alcohol.
Let us look at a few outcomes of this study:
- Drinking 1.4 pints a day or two 330ml cans reduces risk of heart problems
- Did not increase risk of dementia or cancers, review of 150 studies found
- Alcohol and other chemicals in the drink protects heart and blood vessels
- But researchers warned binge drinking is known to harm our health
The results were such that one or two daily servings of alcohol for a man, or up to one for a woman, was associated with a slower HDL decline than either not drinking at all or drinking too heavily. Presented at a meeting of the American Heart Association, the new research showed that moderate drinking arrested the decline in HDL as people get older more than twice as much than heavy drinking, which is defined as more than one daily serving of alcohol women and more than two for men.
The team, from the IRCCS Mediterranean Neurological Institute, Pozzilli, said the alcohol and other chemicals in the drink reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and artery disease.Researchers said moderate alcohol intake slowed the body’s natural decline in high-density lipoprotein (HDL). HDL cholesterol, also known as ‘good cholesterol’, removes harmful cholesterol from the body and reduces a person’s heart disease risk.
But excessive drinking of alcohol over the weekend is going to do us no good. Dr Simona Costanzo, of the IRCCS Mediterranean Neurological Institute, says that “Moderate beer consumption appears to have no detrimental effects, and indeed demonstrated its ability to decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease ”
Official guidance says that it is safest to drink less than 14 units a week. If you do regularly exceed this, it’s best to spread your drinking over three or more days.
While the study of 80,000 Chinese adults showed promising results, doctors have warned people that more research is needed before any firm conclusions can be made.
In other words, don’t start drinking a pint of beer every day just yet.
Well as of now all we can say is that “The key is in the moderation message. If you drink too much alcohol it will have a detrimental effect on your health.”
